To Sail or Fly the Drake?

While drinking a bottle of wine after a few months of discussing how Antarctica is a bucket list item for both of us (I have been to 6 of the 7 continents) and my wife (has been to 5 of the 7 continents) we decided to take the plunge and book a cruise.

The original plan for going to Antarctica was to do a Fly / Fly trip where you fly to bottom of Patagonia and the fly across the Drake Straight an example of this is the Antarctica Express Fly the Drake an offering by Adventure-Life.com but ultimately we decided to sail the Drake and have a few additional days on the ice instead.

When we first started to discuss sailing to Antarctica sailing the Drake Straight is a point where often people have the most concern and or stories of rough conditions. As we did our research we found a few key items in this space, two are interesting VLOG’s from people on large ships making the crossing and while their experience will not be the same as our Viking cruise they do have some good points and are funny to us, they also key in on something that you will find if you continue to research more about the crossing, time of year matters. Our crossing is in the peak season, while the weather is the weather, the hope is peak season will be better than the shoulder season. So below is the first VLOG from Brooklyn Travels the World.

Another fun couple that deserves credit as well as it went from the Drake Shake to the Drake Lake are Dabble and Travel.

Well that is a quick summary of how we chose to ultimately sail across the Drake verse the original plan of flying, please read our other posts about how we chose Viking. Thank you for reading.
